Part 1: You are constantly healing

How do you grow your hair? How do you repair a cell? How do you create your eye colour? You do not know the exact answer, yet you are doing it. Right now. All the time. What is more, if you knew exactly „how to grow your hair“ you still couldn’t do it any better than someone who doesn’t.

In the same way, you don’t need to know the exact ways of how your body facilitates healing, the body does it anyway:

We constantly heal wounds, repair cells, get rid of unwelcome bacteria or damaged cells.

Constantly?

No, there is one exception.

Unless you are not

We are equipped with a very useful mechanism that ensures survival when we are in extreme and immediate danger. If that happens all bodily functions that are not absolutely vital in that moment, including all long-term healing processes SHUT DOWN automatically in order to free all focus and resources to whatever needs to be done for immediate survival. Why bother about long-term regenerating of a bone when a predator has set eye on you!

This very useful mechanism is called stress and was intended to protect us in those rare moments of immediate danger to our life. Unfortunately most of us have taken on a mindset where we are living in a context of constant stress. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified stress as the biggest health risk of the 21st century.

DO NOT FOOL YOURSELF: Chronic stress is the most likely cause of YOUR premature death.

It is also the number one reason that prevents healing.

The cause of stress

Remember, stress is a helpful mechanism when we need to overcome an immediate threat. We are equipped with this ancient mechanism but have evolved as a species with a mind capacity that constantly evaluates situations and labels them as good or bad. Including all those things that haven’t happen yet (and most probably never will) that we turn into „worries“. We perceive these things as possible threats, have our stress mechanism kick in and instruct the body to switch into emergency mode – constantly.

In contrast to Human Beings, any other species will only stress when in physical danger. Not when late for work, when some other creature takes the „right of way“ or the „to do list“ is too long. It will also not worry (perceived threat) on how to pay next month’s rent or what the neighbour next door might be thinking.

Needless to say that none of these issues are the kind of threats that would merit our whole system to shut down and go into survival mode.

Yet our mind does just that. It rings the alarm bell, announces a „threat“ and has the chemicals in our body run wild.

Stress is not a function of how much we have to do or of what is actually going on in our lives. It is a function of our mindset. And yes, if our mindset is not helpful, than the more there is going on, the more we feel stressed … The real cause however is not how much we have to do, instead it is our judgement. Our judgement that a certain outcome of a past, present or possible future event is „bad“ or „wrong“ or „undesirable“. It is by labelling these outcomes as perceived „threats“ that we trigger the stress reaction.

Going once …

You might argue that having a solid judgement is a great tool when it comes to making decisions and choices in life. And that might (or might not) be true. However, you will also have noticed that what you consider to be „right“ is not necessarily what other people consider to be right. As you know, this is the mother of all conflict, whether on the road, in relationships or between nations. You might also have noticed that more often than not, some event that you thought was „undesirable“ turned out to be a very good thing at the end and vice versa. Basically, what I am saying is that our judgement might very well be screwed … and may be the whole concept of right and wrong is doubtful in itself as in reality all outcomes simply are „different“. Look at the night sky and tell me which star has the perfect position? You will realize that they are all in different positions but none is any better than another.

Going Twice

Now if that does not convince you and you STILL think you know what is a good and what a bad outcome, let me suggest the following: The underlying belief, that you and I know how things SHOULD be and thus know it better than what the universe, the creator, the natural flow of the world (or whatever you chose to call it) decide to do, seems pretty arrogant and far fetched anyway!

Gone!

And if you still insist that your judgement is the measure of all things and the universe should get its act together and should behave according to your plans and ideas, then I have news for you: Contrary to what you wish, you do not have total control over what happens in your life. Resisting it does not make any difference. So you can as well give up the resistance.

Letting go of stress

So here is the my suggestion. While it is a perfectly good idea to have an intention for a certain outcome, it is about time to give up resistance towards the possibility of things turning out very different. Let me repeat:

It is fine to desire a specific outcome but don’t be attached to it.

Whatever the result may be, accept it. We are not in a position to judge, it is just different and most likely just as good as any other outcome. This is the daily practice of letting go of all stress.

And letting go of stress is the one thing we need to do to take our bodies off emergency mode and let them do the healing work that they so naturally do themselves.

No more fear

You get it. In order to heal, you need to be relaxed so that the body can do the work. However, people struggling with a serious, chronic or potentially life threatening disease often experience fear of the consequences of their illness. This causes an immense amount of stress which is totally counterproductive.

Now, the only way to overcome that fear is to be perfectly fine with the outcome you are most afraid of.

There, … I said it.

There is an important difference between being committed to ones life and being attached to life. On one level you have to be perfectly fine with the possibility of dying, being paralysed or whatever your current fear is about. Now notice, I am not saying you should want it.

But you need to accept the POSSIBILITY of it happening in order to free your mind from constantly worrying about it

By accepting all possibilities you are now free to focus your intention, your action and most importantly your thoughts on you becoming perfectly healthy.

Imagine you are a team of football players scared to loose a match. You will never be able to play your best game when you focus on the fear of loosing. Only once you have accepted the possibility of loosing and are perfectly willing to face it, you can focus all your attention on what you really want: which is winning the match.

Part 2: Conscious healing through intention

As we have seen your body does miraculous things. Left by itself (meaning: NOT taken into a constant emergency mode through stressing) healing will naturally take place. This is true for every living being. Now, us Humans are the only species that can make use of a powerful additional healing method: And that is conscious intention.

The power of conscious intention

We have seen that the body has an innate natural healing intention. This is working in your favour and your job is to allow the natural healing to take place by being totally relaxed mainly through avoiding a state of stress. So how comes that we and all other beings get ill, age and eventually die?

The laws of physics (2nd law of thermodynamic) dictate that with time, everything moves from a state of order to a state of disorder. This is why things (if left to their own) fall apart as time goes by. For us humans it shows through the process of aging and becoming more prone to illnesses. So for most of us the „state of disorder“ is increasing with age which is why it becomes more and more difficult for our natural healing to make up for it and repair any damage.

This is where your conscious intention can make all the difference! This is a unique human feature. No tree, no flower, no bird and no dog can do that.

Conscious intention has become so much our second nature that we no longer realize how we utilize it to create basically all the results in our life

If you need to buy a new table you set the intention and make it happen. If you want to visit a friend, you set an intention, make all necessary arrangements and than you go there. We do it all the time, yet we overlook how our conscious intention reigns the most complex and unconscious processes necessary to realize our intention. In order to visit our friend for example a nearly infinite number of bodily functions have to work together to make it happen. Just look at the „simple act“ of walking and taking the first step. You will not be able to explain exactly how all these muscles have to work together to keep the balance and create the movement or how your vocal cords utter the word „Hello“ in perfect harmony with the muscles of your mouth when you see your friend. These processes are run by your unconscious nervous system but are INITIATED by your conscious mind.

Are you listening …?

The most miraculous and complex functions are set in motion because we make a conscious decision

Yet when it comes to healing most of us live under the illusion we can not do much, because we neither understand nor control the processes needed to facilitate the healing. Let me tell you the following: You also don’t understand nor control the exact muscles movements necessary to walk or talk or do anything at all really … Yet you simply take the decision and your body does what it needs to do.

The intention tests

In order to successfully work with intention we have to understand what intention is and what it isn’t. So if you struggle with your healing it is most probably due to one of the following points. Have a look and see whether any of these sound familiar so you know how to grab the bull by the horns!

The willpower test

Don’t fool yourself. Intention is not the same as willpower nor discipline. The latter create tension and are the opposite of relaxation.

Whenever you need willpower or discipline it is a clear indication that your intention is not what you say it is.

Imagine you say you want to do regular exercises but can not get off the couch without a good portion of willpower. Let’s face it: Your intention to do exercises clearly is weaker than your intention to rest cosily on the sofa. If it was the other way, you would easily get up and get moving.

The way to strengthen your conscious intention is by connecting with the vision you have for yourself. Once you notice you no longer need willpower to do the things that you say you want, you know that your intention is clear and strong. Whenever you feel you need willpower, it is time to get back in touch with the vision you have for yourself.

The practice test

This is one of the most frustrating breakdowns in healing ….. You start out with a certain healing method and have the first positive results. However instead of increasing the practice (as it is obviously working) you start practicing less. This is typical for people who have an „away from“ intention. If your intention is „to be no longer ill“, than the moment you get better, you get further away from your intention and your motivation weakens. The opposite is the „towards to“ intention. If your intention is „perfect health“, then the more you improve, the closer you get to your goal with adds to your motivation.

The Time test

I will not beat around the bush. If you have a potentially life threatening disease and you tell me you don’t find the time to practice your healing method, than it is clear that you decided that other things are more important than getting healthy. So when you find yourself asking how can I make more time to do my practice, you are asking the wrong question. And all you do is to increase the pressure on yourself (stress!).

The real question is,…

How comes I do anything else but practice?

The Trust test

Trust is important for two reasons. First it automatically reduces stress. And we have seen how important that is in the previous chapters. But secondly…

Our bodily functions are controlled by our nervous systems and this system reacts perfectly well to our beliefs and thoughts

We all know about the countless „miracle“ healings where people’s belief was so strong that it „would move mountains“. While these examples might seem extreme we experience this effect on a daily basis via the so called placebo effect. Patients taking a simple sugar pill but believing to take the „real thing“ regularly report similar or same health benefits than if they had taken the actual medication. This is the power of trust and belief. If you are one of the lucky few that can totally trust that you will be healed, good for you! You need to read no further.

Doubts can be very useful in other areas of your life. When you are not sure you want something. Take the example of visiting your friend. May be you have doubts whether you should do it or not. May be you think you don’t have the time and should rather do your admin work or considering the weather stay home and watch a movie or doubt you have the money for the journey …. Whatever your doubts are, having these doubts greatly diminish the likelihood of you visiting your friend. Now imagine your healing intention. Doubts about whether you will heal or not will greatly diminish your healing possibilities. Instead of setting a clear intention and having your body follow through, you confuse your body with unclear messages and the body responds accordingly.

If you find it difficult to trust and to believe that you will totally heal while being confronted with the pain and the symptoms of your illness, there is no point unfortunately trying to fool yourself. You either trust or you don’t.

But here is what you know for sure. Your body has the ability to heal. And your intention has the ability to greatly support your body in the healing process. So what you can totally trust, no matter your current state, is your ABILITY for perfect healing. And that is just the message your body needs. Knowing that it CAN do it.
